This was originally built in 1855 as the Free State Hotel,
for settlers to stay while their homes were being built. The name was to let
settlers know that Kansas should enter the Union as a free state. It has been
burned down a couple times during these years, each time, Colonel Eldridge
vowed to add another floor. His ghost is said to still haunt the hotel, which
brought the attention of many ghost tv shows who had to check it out. I
remember as kid, going downtown and asking my mom every time, if we could go in
the hotel, just to look at one picture they have behind the front desk,
featuring the ghost. This hotel has been burned down, torn down, closed for
several years, converted into apartments, and restored again to the hotel that
it is today. This is located on possibly one of the most historic spots in
Lawrence, on Mass St., where I had my previous post about the downtown area.
